Terminology

There is no advice on terminology in the Readability guideline. The guideline itself is poor. Below are a few examples.

The guideline states on page 9:

‘Medical terms should be translated into language which patients can understand.’

This advice looks helpful at first sight but is not because it does not provide answers to three questions:

– What are medical terms?

– How can I translate these medical terms? [Are there recommendations for websites, dictionaries, etc.]

‘a language which patients can understand’. This assumes that there is a single language that all patients can understand. Unfortunately this language does not exist.
